The Benefits
of Flavonoids
Introduction
In a recent study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers explored the connection between the intake of flavonoids in connection with aging outcomes in older individuals as well as their effects on brain health.
Flavonoids are an antioxidant compound found in various foods such as blueberries, citrus, kale, onions, dark chocolate and soybeans. Flavonoids are also commonly found in many ingredients used in supplements, such as Burdock - which is found in Essiac.
The article notes that “Flavonoids represent a group of bioactive compounds in plant-based foods and have gained substantial attention for their impact on healthy aging. Abundant in apples, tea, citrus, berries, red wine, and dark chocolate, flavonoids exhibit oxidative stress-reducing, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, suggesting these foods may contribute to alleviating physiological decline associated with age.”
In this study, consisting of 62,743 female and 23,687 male health professionals, it was found that participants with the highest flavonoid intake were more physically active, had a lower BMI and body weight, and were less likely to have hypertension. A strong correlation was also found between higher flavonoid intake and better mental health.
Increasing flavonoid-rich food intake by just three servings per week was associated with an 8% reduction in risk for poor mental health, 11% for frailty, and 7% for physical impairment.
The overall findings of this study were striking:
● Increasing flavonoid-rich food intake by just three servings per week was associated with an 8% reduction in risk for poor mental health, 11% for frailty, and 7% for physical impairment.
● Conversely, reducing flavonoid intake by seven servings per week increased the risk of frailty by 18%, physical impairment by 7%, and poor mental health by a dramatic 60%—particularly among men.
This research highlights the many benefits of antioxidants such as flavonoids, and their ability to significantly help to decrease physical as well as mental impairment. Notably, the study emphasizes that maintaining or increasing flavonoid intake over time, rather than habitual intake, is key to promoting healthy aging.
