Burdock Root: Benefits, Traditional Uses and Modern Research
Essiac’s original formula is comprised of four major herbs: Burdock Root, Sheep Sorrel Leaves, Slippery Elm Bark and Rhubarb Root. However, one of these is considered a main ingredient and considered to be responsible for many of Essiac’s health benefits – Burdock Root. Burdock (Arctium lappa) is present in Essiac at around 60-76% and has many health benefits, traditional uses and an abundance of modern research.
Burdock’s main active compounds are arctigenin and arctiin. These are powerful anti-inflammatories that help to reduce oxidative stress throughout the body. Research has shown these compounds can help with symptoms of colitis, including reducing damage in the colon and a reduction in loss of intestinal epithelial (gut lining) cells. Further research is required. Burdock is also rich in inulin, which is a powerful immune modulator that enhances the function of white blood cells and plays a vital role in carbohydrate metabolism.

Burdock’s use has dated back to over 3,000 years in Chinese medicine and was commonly used as a remedy for infections, sore throat, rashes, and other skin problems. It was also used in traditional medicine in Canada for coughs, asthma, blood and skin diseases, and rheumatism. Some of these uses are similar to Burdock’s use in modern day.
Burdock’s common uses in present day include:
· Cold and flu support
· Immune support
· Low appetite and anorexia
· Gastrointestinal complaints
· Fever
· Inflammatory conditions
Burdock root is also considered to be a functional food. Its inulin content is rich in prebiotic fiber, enzymes that help to digest complex carbs and antioxidants. Burdock has also been found to have stronger antioxidant effects than many vegetables and fruits, and burdock extract has research demonstrating it as a more powerful antioxidant than vitamin C.

Burdock has also been found to be a source of:
· Mucilage, which helps protect the gut lining
· Over 15 chlorogenic acids, antioxidants that may help support normal blood pressure, and blood sugar
· Cinnarine, which may promote detox
· Quercetin, a well-researched plant antioxidant
Polysaccharides, which reduce inflammation and feed good gut bacteria
As the primary ingredient in Essiac’s original four-herb formula, Burdock is an important part of what makes Essiac beneficial to historical and modern health. While research continues to explore how burdock and its individual compounds may support the body, its long history of traditional use and complex nutritional and botanical profile make it a plant worth further investigation. Burdock offers an intriguing look at the connection between traditional herbalism and modern science, and helps to explain the many health benefits of Essiac.
